World Athletics Championships Tokyo 2025

The 20th edition of the World Athletics Championships took place at the Japan National Stadium in Tokyo between 13 and 21 September 2025, bringing together nearly 2200 athletes from 198 countries across 49 events. Tokyo 2025 became a championship defined by extremes: record-breaking speed, historic dominance and finishes decided by fractions of a second.

Melissa Jefferson-Wooden won three gold medals at the World Championships, taking victories in the 100 m, 200 m and the 4×100 m relay, including a historic 100 m–200 m sprint double as the first American woman to do so. Her 10.61-second run in the 100 m set a new World Championships record and ranks as the fourth-fastest time in women’s history. Mondo Duplantis extended his era of supremacy with an eighth global pole vault title, while Mattia Furlani captured the men’s long jump with an 8.39 m leap. The marathon was decided by just 0.03 seconds, one of the closest finishes in World Championship history.
